THE EVIDENCE BEHIND THE EXHIBIT

Wonder, with the evidence.

A reconstruction should help explain what fossils reveal and what remains uncertain.

Follow a claim back

Profile statements link to museum information, institutional publications or original research. Species, genus and broader-group evidence are distinguished. A measurement of one specimen is not automatically a size range for its species.

Read the evidence labels

Source supported identifies a documented description. Inferred marks an interpretation from anatomy or related evidence. Debated identifies competing explanations. Not established means the reviewed sources do not support a firm conclusion; it does not mean a behavior never occurred.

Understand the measurements

Reconstructed length, estimated mass and a living animal’s adult range answer different questions. Dossiers identify specimen scope, life stage and uncertainty. Comparison values are available only where the reference supports an appropriate adult estimate.

Reproduction and life together

Eggs, nests, growth records and bonebeds can offer clues, but their meaning depends on context. A nest does not establish courtship or lifelong pairing. A group of buried animals does not by itself establish a stable herd.

See the limits

The detailed source notes identify what was inspected and any limits on access or interpretation. Source inspection is distinct from specialist approval. Illustrations are interpretations, and attractive artwork does not establish a scientific claim.
